COVID-19 Precautions: We are open again! We wanted to share with you the measures we have taken to ensure your peace of mind.
At McCulloch-Wilson Dental, we celebrate innovation as we gain more knowledge and experience. Innovation allows us to offer our dental family services that are less invasive and more comfortable with healthy, beautiful, and sometimes quick results! Invisalign is a good example of this—the clear aligner system has helped over five million people worldwide smile with more confidence. As Invisalign continues to tweak their technology, the variety of cases they’re able to treat widens. We’d love to tell you about how it works!
Before we get into the how, we’d like to discuss the why. Orthodontic treatment is often thought of as purely cosmetic, but the truth is there are benefits that go beyond your smile’s appearance. However, we also don’t think the confidence boost a straight smile can give you should be understated. When your teeth are brought into alignment, your bite is too, and the way your teeth meet can work for you or against you.
An ideal bite, or occlusion, is one with upper teeth that rest just slightly above the lower teeth, and the top surfaces of molars meeting when your jaw is closed. If your teeth don’t meet when your jaw is closed, this is called an open bite, and it’s likely to cause pain or difficulty during everyday activities like eating, and may cause a lisp or other speech impediment. Open bites are also associated with tongue thrusting and may contribute to sleep disordered breathing.
As you can see from a brief overview of an open bite, the way your teeth are aligned plays a much bigger role in your overall health than you might suspect. Other types of malocclusions (improper bites) include crossbites, overbites, overjets, and underbites, but spaces between teeth, overcrowding, missing or impacted teeth can also contribute to a malocclusion. It sounds like being born with a good bite is a rarity, right?
The good news is: Invisalign has successfully treated these misalignments and may work magic on your smile, too!
Chances are high you’ve already heard of Invisalign, which hit the market and started being implemented by dentists and orthodontists in 1998. Throughout the 20 years it’s been available, over five million people have successfully straightened their teeth and achieved a bite that simplified their oral hygiene routines, aiding in the fight against tooth decay and gum disease, and alleviating wear on their enamel and pressure on their TMJ (temporomandibular joint). All of this and discretion, too! Without metal brackets and wires, you can watch as the changes happen and smile without revealing your secret!
Besides the fact that aligners are virtually invisible, there are several reasons orthodontic treatment with Invisalign is preferred over traditional braces.
We also offer Invisalign Teen for your growing adolescent. Teenagers appreciate the same benefits of Invisalign treatment that adults do, and their parents are happy to hear of the compliance indicators on the clear aligners and the Invisalign Teen guarantee.
The compliance indicators are blue dots that fade as your teen wears them for the minimum of 22 hours each day and night. Removing them for longer periods of time can delay successful treatment, and nobody wants that! And, if during the first six months of treatment you decide Invisalign Teen isn’t the right orthodontic treatment for your teen, they can switch to traditional braces without incurring any additional costs.
Invisalign feels confident you and your teen will both be satisfied with the advantages clear aligner treatment offers, especially because one million of the five million smiles treated with Invisalign have belonged to teens!
